Learning Outside The Classroom
To be completely honest, I’m not as active outside of the classroom as I should be. The only club I ever was dedicated to was VSA, Vietnamese Student Association. I probably should have joined the AMM clubs, but I had work all the time to help pay for school. I never had any time to join clubs. I also dance collegiately outside of school. Practices are like 4 times a week for like 6-8 hours. It was really hard trying to balance all 3, but I did it!
I did have 2 internships while in the process of finishing school. I enjoyed working at both places and every time I look for a job, I always compare it to those. I loved the environment and the complexity of the position. I think these internships helped me grow as a learner because I’ve never worked in an environment like that before so it was new to me. I learned that the work place is a tough and scary place. It gets stressful towards deadlines and it kind of scares me, but excites me at the same time.
LUONG LASTING, LLC. INTERNSHIP
Working with Luong Lasting has been a great experience thus far and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. It was really different interning for a company that isn’t a part of the fashion community. The beauty industry is very tense and it involves so much stress. Although it isn’t a big company, it still takes a lot of preparation to get events done. I honestly loved how fast paced the company was and how interactive the clients get with the employees. I love the atmosphere and the environment of the company. The employees were great to work with and I’ve made some really good friends along the way.
At Luong Lasting, I oversaw their social media outlets and in charge of their marketing. My tasks were basically to find new strategies to get more followers and to work on new content for future events. This was definitely different for me because it was totally a different target market for me. It wasn’t the everyday girl who likes to be fashion forward. It was women who are getting married and are looking for artists for their wedding day. In the beginning of my internship, I didn’t exactly know how to approach the social media because I’ve never worked with brides before. Whenever I wasn’t working on social media, I was doing inventory and bookkeeping. Every week I would cross check items on a google doc to make sure that we restocked on what artists needed. As for the bookkeeping, I had to convert all my manager’s bank statements into an excel file that showed what was bought and how much it was. It was definitely a new experience for me and I actually liked it.
AMM courses definitely helped me with the process of the internship because there were some tasks that involved me to use the skills I learned in class. Classes that helped me with this internship are AMM250, ABM224, and AMM499. AMM250 and ABM224 helped me with the excel work that I had to do for inventory and bookkeeping. AMM499 helped me with learning how to use multiple social media platforms all at the same time. Overall, I’m glad that I got to intern with them and I’m excited to see what else is in store for me. I still have so much to learn and I can’t wait for what’s to come.
